What do private lessons look like?

Private lessons generally occur 3 weeks of every month. They range in length depending on the age and advancement level of the student. Most lessons will contain the following: warm ups (scales, bow exercises, tone development), polishing a piece, working on a new piece, technique advancement, note reading, focus on posture, and often a fun piece we are working on. You may expect clear direction on what is expected and how to practice at home. Parents of children and tweens are invited to be present at every lesson so they will know how to aid their children’s practice at home.

What do group classes look like?

Group classes occur twice a month and are incredibly motivating for students. Students learn how to play with a group, lead and follow, elevate their playing skills, develop friendships, polish and refine review songs and learn new fun songs. Each group class covers many essential elements of violin playing, which frees up time in private lessons. Students also have the unique opportunity to learn newly commissioned arrangements of pop or movie music. These songs are exciting and bring some fun to students’ study of the violin. We also sometimes collaborate with other instruments, giving students opportunities to meet other musicians and learn how to play musically with them. It is good preparation for orchestra participation, and a lot of fun besides. Participation in the group also provides many performance and service opportunities as we play in venues such as the Festival of Trees, nursing homes and the Children for Children benefit concert.
